About Us
Southwark Council
Southwark is an amazingly diverse and vibrant area with a strong sense of community; the estimated population is due to rise by 20% to 360,000 by 2026 making it one of the most densely populated boroughs in the country. We have a young, diverse and multi-cultural population with over 120 languages spoken in Southwark.
Southwark is a borough that brims with confidence and ambition and this is evident in its residents and communities at large. That ambition is also evident on the Council’s Borough Plan and its vision to deliver a fairer future for all:

Our values include
Southwark has a vibrant mix of culture, food, technology, leisure and arts on its doorstep. Historically Southwark was the centre for entertainment and arts for the city, evident by Shakespeare’s Globe theatre. The borough is home to the Tate Modern, The Shard, Dulwich Picture House Gallery, Borough Market, and has recently welcomed one of London’s newest international theatre at One London Bridge. Southwark is in the heart of London and has excellent transport links and access to central London and the South East.
Stonewall Diversity Champion
As a council we recognise and celebrate the diversity in our population and work hard to ensure that diversity is reflected in our workforce to help us to understand the needs our residents and retain their confidence in the services we offer. We value the difference between people, and the ways those differences can contribute to a richer, creative and more productive work environment. We are committed to ensuring we are inclusive and actively challenge inequalities and discrimination through our Southwark Stands Together and early adoption of Workforce Race Equality Standards (WRES).
Disability Confident Employer
Southwark is an accredited member of the Disability Confident Scheme, which means that we meet five commitments regarding the recruitment, employment, retention and career development of people with disabilities. We also place great
emphasis on supporting our disabled employees through our well-established network for disabled staff, and support from our dedicated HR specialists.
Investors in People Gold Award
As a council we have excellent staff retention rates; the average length of service is 9.6 years. We have been awarded ‘Gold’ Status in 2018 and 2015.
