Steven : Positive Behavioural Support Worker

I joined Southwark Children’s and Adult’s Social Care two and a half years ago as an Assistant Practitioner. Through my work, I have learnt about how the All Age Disability social work team operates to ensure children and families are supported with short breaks and are encouraged to use the service to help the children develop. I have since been successful in becoming a PBS Worker (in the AAD team) and this more specialised role supporting children and their families to understand particular behaviours that meet specific needs.

I am proud to provide support for children and families in the borough. Working with the families to find solutions to problems and enabling the children to reach their full potential with plans and outcomes. The job satisfaction is very high when I feel I am making a difference and helping families improve their quality of life. The part of my job I enjoy the most is visiting children and their families, and doing direct work with the children, finding about what they like to do, where they like to go, what they need help with, what they want to learn. It is all about helping to put in systems that work for the child.

I feel well supported by Southwark Council. It is a big organisation, but has very good leadership from my team and service managers up to the chief executive. The past couple of years have been a challenge for all but Southwark have supported the staff to work remotely and get used to a different way of working. I am looking forward to working for many productive years in Southwark!
